4 Reasons the Chanel Tweed Jacket is a High-End Unforgettable
One
Tweed originated from Scotland in the 18th Century. In the 1950’s, women did not have many
choices for comfortable clothing. Coco
Chanel was determined to change this through the use of tweed. Designers like Dior, designed over-structured
suits and Chanel decided to compete with her by introducing her own suit
creations. Chanel’s design, the tweed
jacket, allowed women to move freely and with comfort.
Two
Chanel borrowed sportswear from the Duke of Westminster, which
happened to be tweed. She loved the way
that the fabric felt and this inspired her to utilize tweed on her designs. Despite the fact that tweed was cheap, Chanel
fell in love with the fabric.
Three
Coco Chanel was 71 years old when she designed the tweed
Chanel jacket. Since then the jacket has
been released in numerous versions. In
the 1920’s Chanel began using tweed on a wide variety of her designs. By the 1930’s Chanel was mixing tweed with
other fabrics including wool, silk and cotton.
By the 1960’s, Chanel released the jacket in pastel colors.
Four
Head designer and creative director of Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld
believes that Chanel tweed will never go out of style. He described it along with white shirt and
jeans as ageless fashion that is here to stay!
The jacket has motivated numerous additional Chanel designs including
tweed skirts and dresses.

In order to increase the value of the jacket, Chanel lined
it in fur. She designed the jacket to
fit similar to a cardigan as opposed to a suit jacket. To accomplish this, Chanel had the silk
lining stitched directly to the tweed, she had the jackets cut in a boxy shape
and she included a three-part construction on the sleeves. The Chanel tweed jacket is a status symbol
that will be relevant forever.
